When you think about getting a haircut, you probably do not give much thought to the shape of your face.

However, maybe you should! Your face shape plays a big role in overall attractiveness, with oval long being considered the most attractive type of face.

If you don’t have an oval face, however, do not despair. There are many hairstyles for men that can make it look like you do.

In fact, your end goal, when choosing hairstyles for men according to face shape should always be to choose a style that makes the face look more oval or that, at the very least, complements the facial shape of the individual.

What are the Different Facial Shapes?

While oval might be considered the most desirable facial shape, it is not the only one.

There are actually a great many facial shapes, and, no matter which one you have, you can still be attractive.

Part of making your face as attractive as it possibly can be, however, requires choosing the right hairstyle for your particular facial shape, whatever it may be.

The Round Face

Every face is beautiful, and no face deserves to be considered “undesirable.” With that said, however, the round face shape tends to be thought of as the “worst” face shape. This is merely because it can often make a person look heavy or overweight.

A round face is generally considered a face in which both the cheekbones and the total face length are similar in terms of their measurements.

These features of the round face also tend to be larger and more pronounced than either the forehead and the jawline. Also, with this face shape, you will find that the jawline is soft and not highly visible on most.

The Oval Face

As we have mentioned, the oval face is the face that tends to be considered the most attractive. Of course, beauty is subjective, and there are always exceptions to this rule. But, with that said, the more you can do to make your face more closely resemble an oval facial structure, the better.

Or, if you have an oval facial structure naturally, then you’re just blessed and can simply get away with highlighting this beautiful bone structure.

You will know that you have an oval face when your face is longer than it is wide and when your jaw is narrower than your cheekbones.

The Square Face

Next, we come to the square face, which can also be quite attractive in its own right.

A square face looks like… well… a square.

The sides of the face are slight with a very small curve at the chin. Square faced individuals also have jaws that are angled and a face that is equal and proportional all around.

A square face often means a strong look, and it can be quite striking… especially if you work it right in terms of your hairstyle.

The Oblong Face

Not too many people have the oblong face. Sadly, this face is often called the “horse face,” which is unfortunate since it can actually be a very attractive facial shape.

In this facial structure, the face is very long. In fact, the overall length of the face is the biggest measurement of the face- a key indicator of an oblong face.

This face also features a jawline, cheekbones, and a forehead that are all the same or very close in size.

The Diamond Face

Almost as attractive as the oval face, the diamond face is often beautiful and makes for a striking person.

People with a diamond face often have a narrow chin and a narrow forehead as well. However, these features are balanced out by high, wide cheekbones, which can be incredibly alluring.

The Heart Shaped Face

What could be lovelier than the heart shape? We have the answer to that question: the heart shaped face!

This face features an often prominent, pointy chin, and a wide forehead. And, while this facial shape might not look great on everyone who has it, especially if it is not accentuated correctly, it can be surprisingly striking and lovely when handled the right way.

The Triangular Face

When most people think of triangles, they think of things like Doritos or slices of pizza. And, while these things definitely do have a distinct triangle shape (at least until you bite into them!), faces can often be triangular as well.

Triangular faces feature a very large jawline, often quite pronounced. Then, the cheekbones and the forehead are smaller, often markedly so.

This is a face shape that can easily be rocked with the right care and the right haircut.

Understanding The Facial Shapes

Now that you have a clear understanding of the different facial shapes, the next step is to research… and maybe even take some measurements, to find the right haircut for your particular facial shape.

Don’t worry. If you’re struggling to wade through all of the information available, we’ve got you covered with our surefire tips for choosing hairstyles for men according to face shape!

The Best Hair Styles For Different Face Shapes

As you can see, there are all kinds of different facial shapes. The key, then, is to choose the hairstyle that best fits your face shape.

Once you have figured out your face shape, that means that you have fought half of the battle. The next step is to educate yourself on which hairstyles best suit you and your face.

The Round Face: Haircut Tips

To start with, if you have determined that you are dealing with a round face, do not despair.

Sometimes, round faces are simply due to carrying excess weight and will change favorably with concentrated weight loss efforts.

In other cases, round is just the natural shape of the face, no matter what the weight might be.

Regardless, a round face can be amazingly attractive, especially when styled the right way.

If you have a round face, we suggest you go for longer hair. No, long hair may not be super common in men, but it can definitely work with this facial structure.

All those long locks will lengthen the face. However, let the hair grow too long, and you run the risk of looking shaggy and unkempt. Thus, our advice is to have your long hair trimmed regularly and to not let it dip too far below the shoulders if you can help it.

You can have layers too, if you like. Just keep them long and full. Similarly, bangs are not a problem for the round face, but they typically work best when pushed off to the side so that the roundness of the face is not as evident.

The Oval Face: Haircut Tips

If you have an oval face, you are in luck! You have the most desired facial type. So, congratulations. You can get away with any style that you desire. They all look good on the oval face.

In fact, people without oval faces often pick cuts that make their faces look more oval, so you have nothing to hide.

With that said, we do think that longer styles tend to accentuate the oval facial shape particularly well.

So, if you have this coveted facial shape, think long and hard before you get rid of those tresses.

The Square Face: Haircut Tips

Square faces can be very attractive and very masculine. If you have one, though, you should be aware that they can also be quite sharp. For this reason, it’s a good idea to choose flattering haircuts that soften the angles in the face.

The best way to achieve this goal is with a cut that is taller up top to help balance out the face. However, a short look can also work, as long as the hair that is there is well-styled for texture and visual interest. This will keep attention away from the harsher angles of the square facial shape.

The Oblong Face: Haircut Tips

Like the square face, the oblong face typically looks its best when paired with a shorter haircut. Don’t worry, though. Your haircut doesn’t have to be boring. You can play around with the part for a more interesting look.

Some clever ways to change things up include a side part, a crew cut that sweeps to the side, or leaving a little length on top for spiking and tousling.

And, while we are mostly focused on the hair on your head, remember to keep your facial hair in check. Having a big beard can make your face look wider and larger and doesn’t typically work well for those with oblong faces.

The Diamond Face: Haircut Tips

If you have a diamond face, you need to do something interesting and that gives you volume up top. Otherwise, your face is going to look long and sharp and just not its best.

So, what are some good options for achieving a more balanced look? Well, you could do a faux hawk, in which you keep the center of the hair slightly longer than the rest of the hair on your head.

You could also try a high fade or go for side-swept or otherwise interesting bangs that stand out.

And, if you’re the type who is into facial hair, don’t worry. A diamond face often looks particularly attractive with a nice beard or even a mustache.

The Heart Face: Haircut Tips

Your goal with a heart shaped face is to balance the top part of your face with the bottom. You especially want to try and choose a haircut that does not make your chin look overly narrow, which can be unattractive.

A shorter cut with a textured bang is a good way to achieve this look, but there are other options too. Also, remember not to “over style” your hair since this can get your delicate angles all out of whack and ruin the effect you have created with your haircut.

The Triangular Face: Haircut Tips

Men with triangular faces need styles that add thickness and volume to the hair up top. The goal here is to balance that wide jaw and narrow forehead. We recommend a pompadour or something else textured and full for this facial shape.

However, really anything that keeps your hair looking full and lovely is going to be a good look for you.

Styling Your Hair The Right Way

Now that you understand a bit more about choosing hairstyles for men according to face shape, the next step is to get out there, choose the right haircut, and then get it done. Or, if you’re brave, you can do it yourself.

No matter what haircut you ultimately choose, though, it’s important to keep your hair well-styled and taken care of. If you don’t do those things, your hair isn’t going to be attractive, no matter what cut you get.

A lot of men, unfortunately, are kind of clueless when it comes to styling their hair, but it doesn’t have to be that way. By following some basic tips, you can have model-level hair without a lot of expertise.

Try Styling Paste, Especially If Your Hair Is Thinning

One of the things that men dread the most is thinning hair. And, while thinning hair can be a pain, it is nothing to get too upset over. It doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going bald and, with a little knowledge, you can still style it well.

If you have thinning hair, it’s a good idea to use some kind of styling paste. Matte styling pastes – there are many brands – work particularly well. When applied, they make the hair look fuller and thicker so that no one has to know about your little thinning secret.

If You Towel Dry, Do It The Right Way

Most men don’t spend the time with a blow dryer to get their hair dry. Instead, they will just grab a towel fresh out of the shower, rub it over their hair, and go on their way. However, this drying method isn’t the smartest since it can damage your vulnerable wet hair. Do too much, and you’ll end up with frizz and split ends, which nobody wants.

None of this is to say that you can’t or shouldn’t towel dry. You just have to do it the right way. So, what is the “right way?” We recommend shaking the extra water out of your hair and then carefully using the towel to rub the hair in the direction that it goes. This will minimize damage and more fully protect the hair.

Don’t Wash Your Hair Every Day

You might think that washing your hair every day is a sign of impeccable hygiene. However, it’s actually not the best habit to get into and can be damaging to your hair by not giving it time to replenish its natural, strengthening oils.

We recommend, instead of shampooing every day, that you shampoo every other day or even every three days if your hair is thicker.

Don’t Overuse Hair Products

We have already mentioned how hair products, like pastes, clays, and gels can be helpful for styling your hair and making it look its best.

However, you don’t want to use too much of anything. Doing so can weigh down your hair and make it look gunky and funky instead of fabulous.

Thus, use hair products sparingly. A little dollop here and there goes a long way with most products, so don’t overdo it. Remember, you can always add more product if needed, but you can’t take product away without a full-out wash, so go slow and sparingly from the start.

Don’t Make The Water Too Hot

Many men love nothing more than standing under a steaming hot shower. Even we have to admit that it feels pretty darn good.

However, very hot water is actually not so great for your hair. It strips out those necessary natural oils that protect and strengthen the hair. And, it can also make hair more dry and brittle over time.

Thus, as hard as it may be, try and keep your shower water cool, at least when you dip your head under it. Your hair will look shinier and be healthier as a result.

Keep Your Hairline Neat And Clean

As a final word of advice, we suggest keeping your hairline neat and clean. This will enhance your look and keep your hairstyle looking like it did when you stepped out of the salon.

The good news is cleaning up that hairline is super easy. Just keep a portable electric razor on hand and then, as needed, clean up those edges over the bathroom sink.

Look Your Very Best By Researching Hairstyles For Men According To Face Shape

As you can see, there are all kinds of things you can do to look your best from head to toe. It all starts, though, with the right haircut and hairstyle for your face shape.

From there, with careful styling and careful hair care, you can have beautiful hair that complements you and makes your natural attractiveness stand out even more.
